Corona Santiago’s Chanel Hoffman and Riverside Christian’s Sami Whitaker helped their volleyball teams have historic seasons, and both players earned top honors when the CIF-Southern Section released its postseason awards Tuesday.

Whitaker, a senior outside hitter, was the Player of the Year in Division 5A. She finished second on the team with 155 kills and 74 aces, but it was her defensive prowess that earned her the honor. Whitaker registered 565 digs during the season to help the Cougars win the program’s first section title.

Whitaker averaged 23.6 digs and six kills a match during the section playoffs.

Santiago’s Arlen Elvik and Riverside Christian’s Joyceann Barbarino were chosen the Coach of the Year in Division 2AA and Division 5A, respectively.
