2013 CIF Champion Cougar Volleyball Team

Riverside Christian made history Saturday by being the first Volleyball team to make it to and win the CIF Championship.  Riverside Christian Played League rival West Shores.  Previously West Shores had beaten Riverside Christian both times they faced in the regular season.  In the first set of the CIF Championship game, Riverside Christian set the tone by jumping out to an early lead, and was able to hold off the Wild Cats and win 25-23.  In the second and third set, Riverside Christian fell behind (13-7 set 2, 8-3 set 3)and had to battle to get back in the game.  In both sets Riverside Christian fought back and won with scores of 25-17, 25-19, and received the CIF Championship Trophy.

Over the last 5 weeks the Cougar Volleyball Program has been running like a fine tuned machine with seniors Megan Holmes and Sami Whitaker at the wheel.  Junior Setter Yaneli Fernandez has been on the top of her game putting the ball in perfect position for Megan Holmes, Sami Whitaker, Rachel Richardson, Taylor Schamber, or Cameron Anderson to put it away for the point.  Having a Libero(Defensive Specialist) as the Head Coach has changed the Cougars perspective on how the game should be played.  Riverside Christian focuses on a strong back row defense that averages 18.4 digs per set.  In the Championship Game Sami Whitaker added to that statistic by having 35 digs on Saturday.

Cougar Volleyball will continue to make history when they take on Mammoth Tuesday, 11/26/13 @ Riverside Christian at 7:00pm.  RCS Volleyball is in the State Championships and will be playing teams from all over the state of California.  Please come and support our Cougars in a historic post-season run.
